Too many people think of World War II as just another page in the history books, when in fact so much has changed in the world as a result of the war. Nearly 80 years later, the war continues to create stories for filmmakers, and few do it better than writer-director (actor-turned-director) Brady Corbet and his screenwriter (and romantic partner) Mona Fastvold. This is a grand old-fashioned epic with a few special features that deserve to be highlighted. Running for 3 hours and 35 minutes, Corbet included an intermission (a 15-minute countdown on the screen). The opening credits run horizontally from right to left, while the closing credits run diagonally. For true film buffs, the film was shot in VistaVision to capture the atmosphere of the era.Upon arrival, he is greeted by familiar faces from home
The first part covers the years 1947-1952, while the second part covers 1952-1960, and the Epilogue takes us to Venice in 1980. Oscar winner Adrien Brody plays Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian architect who arrives in America after World War II after using heroin "pain" by boat across. Due to administrative and managerial red tape, Laszlo had to go ahead of his wife and niece, to whom he regularly writes. Attila (Alessandro Nivola, FACE/OFF, 1997) has already Americanized himself to the point of marrying and running a custom furniture business. He offers Laszlo a bedroom and the opportunity to help him design furniture. When Harry Lee Van Buren (Joe Alwyn, THE FAVORITE, 2018), the son of a wealthy Pennsylvanian, is contracted to redesign his father's library, Laszlo gets the chance to showcase his brilliance.Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr
(Guy Pearce) turns out to be a man who doesn't like surprises and fires his employees. Soon, the tycoon's head cools down and he finds Laszlo on a much bigger project - a massive monument on a hill overlooking the city. The project builds a strange bond between the wealthy Harrison and the brilliant Laszlo - although the rich man is anything but stable, and his son flaunts his arrogant, annoying tendencies (Alwyn's specialty). Laszlo maintains one real friendship. She becomes close to Gordon (Isaach de Bankole) after meeting him on the food safety line. Despite his new world, Laszlo still struggles with poverty; however, one of Van Buren's lawyers is able to help with the paperwork to bring Laszlo's family to America. This applies to the audience as well, as I was exhausted by the end
In the second part, his wife Erzsebet (Felicity Jones, THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, 2014) and mute niece Zsofia (Raffey Cassidy, MEET THE HOLY BUILDER, 2018) head to America. Erzsebet is confined to a wheelchair after nearly starving to death as a result of the war. She is an intelligent woman married to a creative genius, but the land of opportunity continues to throw obstacles in their way (not least Laszlo’s constant drug use). Moments of hope include a trip to the magnificent Carrara quarry to find the perfect piece for Van Buren’s project. It should be noted that, despite the protagonist’s name, this is a fictionalized depiction of the period, and the journey is both physically and mentally demanding.panda africa
