Chronology

After being released from prison, Lan returns to his hometown in northwest China. While on the dog patrol set up to catch stray dogs before the 2008 Olympics, he encounters a black stray dog. Two lonely souls embark on a new journey together. Eddie Penn [the main character] developed such a strong bond with Blue, the dog featured in the film, that he adopted her after filming finished. I had no idea what to expect when I saw this film. It was slow but utterly gripping. It is set in a rather grim setting but it really opened my eyes to how people live in some parts of China. It is a hard life, barren and treeless, but the city is preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the loudspeakers blare propaganda in true Communist Chinese style. Although it is a sobering film, it has some pretty humorous moments and although there is not much dialogue, what is NOT said is thought provoking. I understand that this was the winner in CANNES.
